Talking to My Soul

Last Fall I completed a project called, Letters to My Soul.  It written in letter format where I attempt to give voice to a wiser, more experienced me, speaking to my current me.  Before you think I’m too nutty be assured that the Psalmist also uses language like “…be still my soul…praise the LORD O my soul….why, my soul are you down cast …and…awake my soul.”

I figured if it was ok for Biblical writers to talk to their souls,

then it was ok for me too!

Today as Fall races in I felt this entry was appropriate.  Enjoy!

Dear Soul,

I noticed that you were absolutely captivated this morning by the sunrise and warm breeze.  You are never so in tune with the presence of our Heavenly Father as when you are embraced by His beautiful creation.  I watched how you melted a bit in the warm glow of the beginning day with all its’ colors of red, orange and yellow.  I could tell your soul filled with peace and inspiration.

I wonder if that is why the Father crafted nature in such an enticing fashion?  I wonder if it is His idea to draw precious souls to Him through His creative tapestry?  Do you ever wonder about it?  Do you ever wonder what He is saying when you melt in the presence of His beautiful work?

King David was a musician and he wrote so many songs.  “The heavens declare the glory of God: the skies proclaim the work of His hands.  Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge.  They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them.  Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.” (Psalm 19:1-4 TNIV)  David’s lyrics affirm what you mysteriously experienced.  Without a human word spoken you understood the sound of creation, it sang our Fathers praise.  It told of His unbelievable creativity, ingenuity and power.

This is what you needed to hear today, wasn’t it? Your soul calmed in the low light of the morning sunrays.  It was because of Him.  He sent His creation to encourage you with who He is.  Our Father is a creative, ingenious, powerful One who has a creative, ingenious and powerful presence in this world and in your life.

Before you were arrested by His beauty this morning you had a lot of thoughts twisting inside you, and without even knowing it, each one of your concerns were blanketed by our Father.  Oh you didn’t get specific answers.  No.  But you received specific reassurances that all that you were wrestling with and wondering about the Father is able to work out.  His peace affords contentment and certainty before knowing how and when things are revealed.

Precious soul, this is what you need to hold onto.  Living in this world you are forced to find peace and rest only if and when things are going well.  That is the best this world has to offer you.  We both know it’s not enough because so often things do not go well.  Sometimes you are not well and it shades everything around you to a gray and foggy confusion.

You need something more and the Father gave you a glimpse of this today.  He gave you more when peace filled you as you watched the sun rise.  On a level you could neither explain nor completely comprehend, the Father touched your soul and brought you into awareness of His glory.  It changed you didn’t it?  You had a holy visitation and wasn’t even aware.  I hope the next time you are caught off guard by the beauty of nature you remember this conversation.  I hope you remember that the Lord is trying to capture your heart and whisper to you that He is the creative, ingenious and powerful lover of your soul wanting you to know and believe Him.  This is His encouragement to you even if you don’t know how or when things will turn around.  Peace is yours even if your situation isn’t peaceful, it can be peace filled because of His presence with you.

“And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” (2 Corinthians 3:18 TNIV)
